Columbia Gas of Maryland presents $10,000 contribution to Washington County Community Action Council; supporting new facility’s Energy Assistance Department

Thursday, June 15, 2017

Columbia Gas of Maryland, Inc. presented a $10,000 grant to the Washington County Community Action Council (CAC) in support of the non-profit organization’s Energy Assistance Department.

The Energy Assistance Department, together with the Office of Home Energy Programs’ (OHEP) Maryland Energy Assistance Program, assists eligible Washington County residents with heating and utility costs each year. The Department has processed over 4,000 applications, totaling approximately $2.8 million in assistance.

“Without the help that many Washington County households receive from the Energy Assistance Program at CAC, these friends and neighbors would need to choose between food or medication and paying their utility bills,” said Kim Buchanan, the CAC’s Director of Development.

Employing nine staff members, the Energy Assistance Department is the Maryland OHEP’s Local Administering Agency, a title which authorizes them to distribute aid to qualifying local families in need. The program helps hard-working people by making energy costs more affordable and offering assistance to families struggling to pay their utility bills.
