Save on Winter Heating Bills, Conserve Energy with ‘Cold Weather Minute’ Tips from Columbia Gas

From heating your home safely to what to do if you smell gas to reducing energy costs, the ‘Cold Weather Minute’ from Columbia Gas provides useful tips and information customers can use to stay warm and safe in their homes during the winter heating season.

Each week from now through March, Columbia Gas will spotlight a Cold Weather Minute topic on its Facebook and Twitter sites, providing practical information and guidelines on issues customers face when cold temperatures arrive, including:

  • Winterizing your home to reduce energy costs
  • Managing your heating bills as cold temperatures arrive
  • Keeping your gas meter clear of snow and ice

This Wednesday’s simple tips will provide customers with ways to heat their home safely, including:

  • Cleaning buildup in wood-burning devices and chimneys, and burning only wood in fireplaces or stoves.
  • Keeping space heaters three feet from furniture, curtains, clothing and other combustibles, and turning the unit off if leaving the room.
  • Not overloading electrical outlets or using your stove or oven as a heating source.
