Columbia Gas of Maryland is observing National Safe Digging Month this April by encouraging residents and contractors to contact 811 before starting any digging project, no matter how large or small.
Building fences, installing mailboxes, and completing landscaping projects are common spring activities that can pose risks if underground utilities are not properly marked. Accidentally striking a natural gas line can result in injury, service outages and costly repairs.
Calling 811 or visiting MissUtility.net at least three business days before digging connects customers to Maryland’s utility notification system, which coordinates with local utilities to identify and mark underground lines. These markings help identify the location and type of utility lines, such as gas, electricity, water, or communications, so that digging can be done safely.
“Pipelines and other utilities are often buried just inches below the surface,” Columbia Gas of Maryland President and Chief Operating Officer Mark Kempic. “Ground conditions can change over time, making it essential to call 811 before every dig. It’s not only the safe thing to do, but it’s also free for homeowners, and it’s the law.”
If damage to a natural gas line occurs or a gas odor is detected, individuals should STOP work immediately, LEAVE the area and CALL 911 and Columbia Gas at 1‑888-460-4332 from a safe location.
